An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January surged in the time leading up to former President Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of $32,537.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Market statistics shows that traders assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the morning of January 3rd, suggesting a sharp shift in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

A bill put forward on recently seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

This sector faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.
