EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
