Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together lies a intense contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
